Age to Age (1982)

Updated: Jan 31

Age to Age is the fourth studio album by Christian singer-songwriter Amy Grant, released in 1982 on Myrrh Records.

Age to Age is considered a breakthrough album and earning some recognition within the CCM community as it ushered her into stardom, and also contributed to the creation of the mold for the modern Contemporary Christian music star. The hit success of the album's first two singles, "Sing Your Praise to the Lord," featuring a piano intro based on Johann Sebastian Bach's "Fugue No. 2 in C Minor" from The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1, and "El Shaddai," saw its sales take off, selling well over a million copies. It became the first Christian music album by a solo artist to be certified gold in 1983, and the first ever platinum Christian music album in 1985. It was also the beginning of Grant's years recording at the famous Caribou Ranch Studios in Colorado with Brown Bannister producing.

The album is ranked at number 92 from CCM Magazine's 2001 book The 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music with two of the tracks ranking in the 2006 book The 100 Greatest Songs in Christian Music: "El Shaddai" written by Michael Card and John Thompson at number 5 and would win a Dove Award for Song of the Year given to Card and Thompson and "Sing Your Praise to the Lord" written by Rich Mullins (originally recorded by Mullins' band Zion on their 1981 album Behold the Man) at number 34. Age to Age would top Billboard magazine's Top Christian Albums chart for well over a year throughout 1983 and into early 1984.

Grant also released the concert video on VHS In Concert: Age to Age Tour in 1984 featuring songs from Age to Age as well as early favorites. Band members include Michael W. Smith on the piano and Grant's first husband Gary Chapman on guitar.
